Letter to the editor: We need to legally insist on competence, vetting and safeguards to protect taxpayers

Posted

Is democracy as we know it a good thing? The recent theft of taxpayer funds indicates there was no control over the treasurer, and worse, the elected officials did not practice due diligence in performance of their duties.

Positions not only need good political skills to get elected, but, as Morton found out, they need those elected officials to at least have the education in civil management.

Many cities and social clubs in Washington state have had such looters disguised as bookkeepers and treasurers thanks to good old boys’ styles of mismanagement. We need to legally insist on competence, vetting and safeguards to protect taxpayers. That or dissolve towns such as Morton and annex them to more competent cities.

Your choice — to let these crooks continue to pillage and rob or to hold them to commercial and judicial standards to prevent this situation from happening again and again.
