After viewing Tuesday’s Lewis County commissioners meeting regarding Sean Swope’s Resolution 2528, I would like to comment on my impressions of the way public comment was given and received.
There were approximately 35 comments given. Many of the online commenters were not given a chance to voice their opinions as time for them had run out. Most citizens commented against the resolution. Many told their personal stories of how the current rounding up of people has frightened those with family members and neighbors who have brown skin pigmentation. There were three or four of the commenters who praised Mr. Swope’s efforts to foster a police state here.
My point is, most people did not want the county resolution to pass. Mr. Swope voted to enact the resolution followed immediately by Commissioner Scott Brummer seconding the motion without comment. Commissioner Lindsey Pollock spoke at length of her misgivings of the resolution and her sympathy for affected people. She gave me hope that at least one voice of reason had a seat at the table.
After voicing her misgivings, she fell into line and cast her vote for the resolution.
One of Ms. Pollock’s excuses to enact the resolution was that she feared that federal funding for health care in Lewis County would be cut if it wasn’t passed. That was a moot point as the Big Beautiful Bill will be doing that regardless. The awful bill will enact these cuts fully by 2032. When people experience the harshness of these cuts, there is a good probability we will have a Democratic president and Congress. If the past is any predictor of the future, Republicans will put the blame for citizen’s pain of their loss of health care on Democrats.
What kind of government do we have that would deny health care to the sick and elderly because they don’t happen to live in a red state?
In closing, I ask our county commissioners to listen to the people they represent rather than a despot and his quislings in Congress. And please don’t let Donald Trump’s fear of brown-skinned folks guide you in the future.
