Letter to the editor: Why I dislike Trump

Posted

On Nov. 5, a letter to this fine publication had some questions for progressives who also write letters to the editor. I thought I would provide my answers.

I dislike Donald Trump for many reasons. He is cruel toward his political opponents and indulgent toward the corrupt. He pardoned George Santos, who pleaded guilty to defrauding campaign contributors.

As the chief executive, Trump is supposed to collect taxes and spend money as directed by Congress. Instead, he implemented tariffs without congressional approval and refused to spend money for programs such as USAID that Congress specifically authorized.

As the chief executive, he is supposed to “(P)reserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Instead, he encourages federal law enforcement to abuse peaceful protesters.

I can’t speak for why other letter writers don’t like MAGA voters, but I can tell you why I don’t like them. They are petty, vengeful whiners who hate people who aren’t like them. They want Trump to punish cities for having the temerity of being diverse, tolerant environments.

They have the gall to accuse SNAP recipients of being lazy while they collect Social Security benefits that far exceed what they paid in Social Security taxes.

They think hard-working government employees are lazy bums, and they think dedicated, underpaid climate scientists are fraudsters. They are cruel to the homeless. And finally, rural MAGA voters think the cities couldn’t exist without them, but the cold, hard truth is that this county, and other poor rural counties, would fall to pieces without the money that the cities choose to give to the less fortunate.
