Loggers overcome sluggish first half to top Wildcats

ONALASKA — It was a tale of two halves for the Loggers on Wednesday.

Throughout the majority of the first half, Ocosta was the team in control, and Onalaska wasn’t playing anywhere near its standards.

“We just kind of let them do whatever they wanted,” Onalaska coach Christopher Van Clifford said.

In the final minutes of the first half, Jaelyn Auman stepped up and got the Loggers on the board, and they rolled from there to a 4-0 win.

“It was like two different teams,” Van Clifford said. “We kind of got together and finally started playing … Then we kind of rolled.”

Onalaska added three more goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half.

Leighton Underhill made it 2-0 just minutes into the half, Randi Haight made it 3-0 just four minutes later, and Yuliana Escalera connected on a loose ball in the box to extend the lead to four in the 56th minute.

Underhill, Haight, Kaiyah Sandridge, and Payton Reaves recorded assists on the goals.

For nearly the entire second half, Ocosta could do little more than clear the ball downfield before preparing to defend another attack, similar to a hockey team on the penalty kill.

“It was like vice versa in the first half,” Van Clifford noted.

Van Clifford wasn’t able to put his finger on what caused the early hiccups, but he was pleased to see the girls take charge and bounce back.

“That’s a tough thing to do,” Van Clifford said. “They did a great job pulling it together and playing like they know how to play.”

The win puts Onalaska at 3-0 in C2BL play, and the Loggers are sitting tied atop the league standings with Napavine. In their three wins against Toutle Lake, Raymond-South Bend, and Ocosta, the Loggers have outscored their opponents 13-1.

“We’re in good shape,” Van Clifford said.

The Loggers (5-3-1, 3-0 C2BL) will be back in action at Forks on Monday before returning home to face Adna at home on Wednesday.
