A Pierce County man is accused of forcing a 15-year-old boy into his car and firing shots at the teenager's friend.

Brian Jones Canady, 66, was charged with first-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment, felony harassment with threats to kill and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, court records show.

A plea of not guilty was entered on Canady's behalf during his arraignment Wednesday. Pierce County Superior Court Commissioner Philip Thornton set Canady's bail at $50,000, records show.

Charging details

Pierce County deputies were dispatched Monday at 10:02 p.m. to the 3800 block of 152nd Street East and Brookdale Road East near Frederickson for reports of a possible kidnapping, according to charging documents.

The first 911 caller said she saw a man driving an older white Nissan sedan stop in the roadway, fire two shots from a gun and then grab another person, later identified as a 15-year-old boy, prosecutors wrote. The man reportedly forced the teenager into his car before driving east on Brookdale Road East.

A second 911 caller, who was the teenager's friend, said they were playing "ding dong ditch" when an unknown man pulled up next to them in his car, shot at them and made the 15-year-old go into his car, prosecutors wrote.

The witness told deputies at the scene that the man, later identified as Canady, pointed the gun at her during the incident, and she felt that she was about to get shot. Deputies found a live round in the middle of road. More shell casings were located that appear to have been run over, documents show.

While deputies were investigating, another dispatch came in saying there was a vehicle prowl call just south in a different neighborhood. The caller identified himself as Canady, prosecutors wrote.

Canady reported that he caught someone inside his vehicle, and they were still on the scene at 152nd Street Court East.

Deputies spoke to Canady who identified the alleged trespasser as the teenager. Prosecutors wrote that Canady matched the description of the alleged shooter, and deputies brought in the female witness to identify him. Once she positively identified Canady, he was arrested.

In an interview with the teenager, he said he was with his friend who was doing "something shady." While they were walking on Brookdale, Canady pulled up in his car to confront them, blocking their path. The teenager heard two gunshots and thought his friend had been shot, prosecutors wrote.

The teenager said Canady allegedly forced him to get into his car at gunpoint and took him back to his house. Canady originally made the teenager get out of the car and lie on the driveway. Canady told him he was going to kill him, prosecutors wrote.

Canady then changed his mind and told the teenager to go into his house, prosecutors wrote. The teenager said that Canady walked him through the house with the gun pointed at him for some time. Canady then put the gun on the kitchen counter and went back outside.

Canady told deputies a slightly different story.

He said that he caught the teenager and "his friends" inside his car and grabbed the 15-year-old. He said he got back home from the gym and parked his car in front of his house. Canady said he went back to his car to grab his belongings and saw some teenagers in his car, prosecutors wrote.

Canady told deputies he did not see the 15-year-old in the vehicle but saw him with other teenagers, prosecutors wrote. He said the teenagers ran off and he chased them in his car. He cut the 15-year-old off and shoved him into his car and drove home to call 911. Canady denied knowing anything about shots going off but said he heard them.

Deputies later found a firearm on Canady's kitchen counter.

A records search showed that Canady has prior felony convictions for second-degree robbery. These were four separate convictions from 1997. Canady is listed as an armed career criminal and has a warning from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency.
