The man shot to death by a Vancouver police officer on June 8 pointed a modified fake pistol at the officer before he was shot, investigators say.

The findings of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office — which is independently investigating the fatal shooting of 43-year-old Vadim Saschendo by officer Brandon Riedel — comes about a week after Vancouver Police released a video of the incident last Thursday.

The video from Vancouver Police features body-cam and dashboard camera footage of the incident from multiple angles and shows Sashchenko pointing what appears to be a gun before Riedel shoots him. A portion of the publicly released video features a freeze-frame of the object in Sashchenko’s hand and labels it a gun.

Riedel and another officer, Stuart Drynan, responded to the the 100 block of Southeast Columbia Way on June 8 after receiving reports of a man with an aggressive German shepherd that was biting people. Riedel found Sashchenko at 3 p.m. as he walked on the sidewalk with his dog at Columbia Street near downtown Vancouver, according to police officials and camera footage.

Camera footage shows Riedel pulling up on the street opposite Sashchenko, and then Sashchenko, 43, pointing an object that looks like a gun. Riedel responds by firing his pistol at Sashchenko, the video shows.

The sheriff’s office said that Sashchenko was holding a Super Cap Gun with the orange tip broken off, making it difficult to distinguish it from a real firearm.

The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing.
