Mat Cats Finish 17th at Folkstyle State Championships

A day after high schools congregated at the Tacoma Dome for two days at the Mat Classic XXXIV, it was the Twin City Wrestling Club’s turn at the state championships last Sunday, competing at the Dome for the Washington State Wrestling Association Folkstyle State Championships. 

The Mat Cats finished 17th of the 124 clubs present, with 33 wrestlers earning medals. 

Twin City finished with just one champion, as Robert Coates (18+ 214) earned the gold medal in his run, with Connor Rapp (12U 117), Julian Kennedy (18+ 174), and Courtney Jones (HS Girls 144) all finishing second in their divisions. 

Bronze medal winners included Aliya Penner (Elm girls 60), Ella Greenwood (Elm girls 77), and Chloe Gelvin (Elm girls 81).



Fourth-place winners included Beau Rzasa (U6 45), Kash Davis (U8 53). Royce Rakevich (U8 85), Jackson Tahl (U8 85+), Kalyani Brown (Elm Girls 89), Charlie Wheeler (Elm Girls 101). Fifth-place winners were Adam Easley (U12 160+), Benito Escalera (U16 106), Aspyn Kerlee (Elm Girls 44), Jordyn Kephart (Elm Girls 56), Alayna Anau (Elm Girls 89).

Wrestlers that finished in sixth were Cohen Jewell (U8 85), Dustin Lusk (U10 120), Lanie Sallee (Elm Girls 64). In seventh were Darin Ware (U12 108), Brody Magruder (U12 117), Ryker Rakevich (U12 135), Cody Galpin (U14 165), Lula-May Hilliard (Elm Girls 52). 

And finally, eighth-place finishers included Myryn Phillips (U8 53), Mason Hutchison (U8 56), Hunter Rice (U8 70), Mali Phillips (U10 71), Isaac Lazo (U14 130), Blake Burnett (U16 170), Elizabeth Wheeler (Elm Girls 68).

The Mat Cats will now move forward into the Freestyle/Greco season, with practices held in the wrestling room at W.F. West on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting February 21. Full membership USA Wrestling Cards are required and can be purchased at washingtonstatewrestling.com.
