If Thursday night was any indication, the C2BL championships in a month may have solidified one contender on the girls side and added one for the boys.
Rainier obliterated the girls team race at the Leo Rubstello Invitational in Raymond with an astounding 218 points to take first. Mossyrock was fourth with 61 points while Winlock tallied 50 to place sixth and Morton-White Pass finished in eighth with 42 points.
Madison Ingram had the biggest hand in the Mountaineers showing, sweeping the three distance events (800, 1,600 and 3,200). The junior won the 800 by two seconds and the two-mile by a minute. Teammate Angelica Askey was the runner-up in the three events.
Acacia Murphy claimed the open 100 and high jump while Haleigh Hanson secured the shot put and discus. Jazzlyn Shumate (200) and Ella Marvin (pole vault) also picked up wins for Rainier. Mossyock had two wins by Miley Sanders in the javelin with a toss of 110 feet, 2 inches while its 800 relay ran 1:57.93.
Winlock’s Victoria Sancho (100) and Kendyl Guenther (high jump) each placed second. MWP’s Madyson Bryant was second in the 400 and Karah Fairhart finished third in the javelin.
The Timberwolves accumulated 108.5 points to win the boys team race. It picked up victories by Hunter Brackett in the 3,200 and their 1,600 relay to break away from Kalama (89) and Rainier (80.5). Pe Ell clipped Winlock 56-52 for fifth and Mossyrock was ninth with 38 points.
Brackett outlasted Winlock’s Chase Trodahl in the 3,200 and 1,600 in what could be a preview of the league championships. MWP had just one other victory from Tony Belgiorno, leaping 19-05 to win the long jump. It had top-three finishes in the hurdles from Clark Henderson.
Trodahl won the open 800 in 2:10.51 and Ricky Thompson was second in the 200. Pe Ell’s Carter Phelps swept the hurdles and Rainier’s Zander Peck unleashed a throw of 155-09 to claim the javelin.
Rainier’s Zach Hamilton and Matthew Kenney finished third in five combined events.
