Authorities say the accident that closed northbound Interstate 5 Thursday morning near Castle Rock was caused by a log truck following a Ford F-450 too closely.
A Washington State Patrol press memo states neither driver was injured after the accident around 7:30 a.m. on the northbound lanes near Toutle River Rest Area.
Washington State Department of Transportation reported only one lane was open as of around 10:30 a.m. and diesel fuel had leaked onto the freeway.
Crews laid down materials to contain the spill and prevent it from spreading, according to the agency’s X account.
Washington State Patrol spokesperson Lt. Ryan Tanner said the lanes reopened around 11 a.m.
The press memo states Trevin G. Byrd, 28, of Rochester struck the truck in front of him, driven by Jared P. Petersen, 38, of Arlington, which prompted Byrd to then hit a barrier.
Tanner said Byrd was driving an empty log truck, which typically carries 80 gallons of fuel.
The jersey barrier was also damaged, he added, and the Washington Department of Ecology was notified about the spill.
