For the first time since 2017, the Oakville softball team is in the win column.
The Acorns snapped their 53-game losing streak on Wednesday, defeating Wishkah Valley in a 27-26 thriller. Their last win came on May 26, 2017, 2,896 days ago.
“It was just amazing,” Oakville coach Marissa Lucero said. “I’m really proud of them … They really played as a team today. They kept encouraging each other and kept their spirits up … It was really nice to see.”
Both teams scored in all seven innings, and nine of the 14 half-innings had at least three runs.
The biggest swing came in the fifth inning. Oakville led 13-12 going into the inning, and after the Loggers scored nine to go up 21-13, the Acorns responded with 10 in the bottom half to retake the lead at 23-21.
Oakville led 25-22 going into the seventh, but Wishkah Valley plated four in the top half of the inning to take the lead.
Susette Klautsh drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 26, and then NaeNae Filitaula hit a walk-off single.
Lucero said that the Acorns weren’t sure the game was over until the home plate umpire handed Lucero the game ball and called “ball game.”
“It was so much fun,” Lucero said. “It was like a whole different group of girls tonight.”
Vivi Cruz finished 6 for 6 with a triple and three runs batted in, while Ui’Lani Siufanua added five hits in six at-bats and brought home two runs.
Raven Blackwell added two hits and four RBIs, Riyah Filitaula added two hits and three RBIs, and Taryn Baker had four hits and two RBIs. Lakota Blackwell also drove in two.
The Acorns (1-8) will be back at home on Thursday to face Ocosta.
