Olympia police seek witnesses to an assault that took place Saturday afternoon at a homeless encampment near Pacific Avenue.
That camp is sometimes referred to as "The Jungle."
About 1 p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 3100 block of Pacific Avenue Southeast after a woman called to report that she had found the victim, a 48-year-old woman, Lt. Paul Lower said.
As police drove to that address, a man flagged them down at the scene, he said. Police entered the camp and found the woman with extensive injuries to her face and head.
"Clearly, it was a violent assault," Lower said.
She was initially taken to an area hospital, but was ultimately taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle because they needed to evaluate whether she needed surgery for her injuries, he said.
Police so far have little information about the assault, Lower said. Detectives have visited the victim in the hospital, but she was unable to speak. They plan to try again, he said.
