A TriMet driver who spotted a person with a serious stab wound to the neck in Wood Village stopped the bus, stepped off of it and rushed to the person’s aid Thursday.

A Multnomah County Sheriff’s deputy who responded to the stabbing around 7:15 a.m. found the driver trying to help the person. The deputy also began administering additional first aid.

A sheriff’s office news release Thursday afternoon stated that paramedics rushed the victim to a local hospital, where the victim remained in intensive care. The sheriff’s office said Michael Wayne Romine, 56, was booked into county jail on accusations of attempted second-degree murder and other charges.

Romine is scheduled to make a first appearance in Multnomah County Circuit Court Friday.

The victim was found in the 23000 block of Northeast Halsey, a busy two-lane road lined with apartments and houses.

A TriMet spokesperson, Mark Miller, declined to share additional details but acknowledged the bus driver’s compassionate response.

“Certainly we’re proud that our operator was able to step up and help this person, and we’re sending our best wishes for the person’s recovery.”

Detectives from the East County Major Crimes Team are investigating the stabbing.
