Authorities responding Monday morning to the report of an empty kayak floating in the ocean off Fourth Avenue in Seaside later recovered the body of a man who was taken to Providence Seaside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man, whose name has not been released, was in his 50s, according to the Seaside Police Department

A witness told police the man had been in the ocean with other kayakers when he became separated from the group. The man was reported to be wearing a black wetsuit, but no life jacket, police said.

After receiving a 911 call, lifeguards and rescuers used two rescue boats to systematically search the surf zone, police said. A witness spotted the man’s body in the ocean near Second Avenue.

The Seaside Police Department, Gearhart Fire Department, and Medix assisted Seaside Fire & Rescue on the call.
