Pirates Down Fishermen by 30

The No. 3 Adna girls basketball team got closer to playing its favorite type of game Thursday at the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic, downing Ilwaco 73-43.

“We’ve been working so hard the past three days on conditioning and sprinting the floor,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “We have depth, we have a bench, and (can) play yourself until you’re really tired, and it showed.”

Nobody’s hustle showed more on the final statsheet than senior post Karlee VonMoos, who dropped a 20-point, 11-board, 10-steal triple-double.

Sixteen of those points came in the first half, and despite her solid defensive numbers, most didn’t come off her own steals, but straight off of Ilwaco baskets.

“She doesn’t take the ball out, but she’s sprinting endline-to-endline,” Bannish said. “She got a lot of 1-to-2-to-5s, just outrunning their big girls down the floor.”

VonMoos powered the Pirates to a 35-22 lead at halftime, but coming out of the break, Ilwaco started to make the adjustment on her on defense. That’s when things opened up for the rest of the Adna offense, and the Pirates hit seven 3-pointers with three guards finishing in double figures.

“We got all of our threes in the second half from them doubling down low,” Bannish said. “And that’s how we want to play. We want to go inside-out, we don’t want to just play around the perimeter like we have been a bit.”

Sophomores Danika Hallom scored a game-high 22 points, with Gaby Guard adding 16. Kendall Humphrey didn’t get on the scoresheet, but led the Pirates with 13 rebounds.

“It’s fun to see those sophomores grow,” Bannish said.

Brooklyn Loose finished with 13 points of her own.

Adna will wrap play with one more game in Menlo on Friday, facing host Willapa Valley.
