Pirates Outmuscled at Montesano

The Adna girls basketball team tasted defeat for the first time this season Tuesday, falling on the road 64-44 to perennial 1A power Montesano.

Danika Hallom led the Pirates with 14 points, and fellow sophomore Gaby Guard had 12.

Early on, Adna’s defense did everything it wanted to, but the Pirates couldn’t make anything of it. The guests turned their hosts over 18 times in the first half, but only converted them into 23-points, fell behind 11-0 early, and trailed by four at the break.

Out of the half, Montesano’s size began to tell, with McKynnlie and Evanjillie Dalan combining for 35 points. The Bulldogs stretched their lead by five points in the third quarter, and then doubled the Pirates 22-11 in the fourth.

“They just beat us up in the paint,” Adna head coach Chris Bannish said. “Second-chance points, we didn’t rebound well.”

Adna (7-1, 4-0 C2BL) will head west next week, capping its 2022 in Menlo at the JQP tournament. The Pirates will start with a Dec. 29 game against Ilwaco, after a week’s worth of practice going over their first defeat.

“It’s good for us,” Bannish said. “It’s basic things that we’ve got to fix, but it was a good test for us. Now we have stuff to work on in practice.”
