Pirates overcome serving woes to sweep Tigers

It was far from a perfect night at the service line for Adna on Tuesday against Napavine, but the Pirates were still able to sweep the Tigers 25-19, 25-16, 25-12.

The Pirates committed 15 serving errors, but were able to work around them to win their seventh straight game to open the season.

Danika Hallom led Adna with 13 kills, nine digs, four assists, and an ace, while Gaby Guard dished out 29 assists while adding nine digs, three blocks, three aces, and a stuff block.

Karsyn Freeman had another stellar night at the net, tallying 17 kills while also recording six digs and an ace, while Jaylee Humphrey logged six digs and four aces. McKenna Torrey had three aces as well as seven digs and three kills.

Napavine coach Monica Dailey was pleased with what she saw early on, as the Tigers led halfway through the first set, but Napavine’s aggressiveness seemed to fade as the game went on.

“That comes with maturity within the game,” Dailey said. “They’re continuing to grow and that’s what we want. We’ll keep working hard and hopefully we improve enough to make it to state this year.”

The Tigers had a better day at the service line, and they also did well in serve receive, two areas that Dailey is always focusing on. She noted that there has been growth in those areas, and she’s happy to see the work starting to pay off.

Jessie McCoy, Lillian Blair, Emily Kang, and MaKayla Brett were all perfect serving. Kang added 16 digs, and McCoy and Nicholle Valentine had five kills each.

The Tigers (3-4) will have one more non-league game on Wednesday against Morton-White Pass before jumping into C2BL play on Thursday at Toledo.

“We’re having the conversation of beating the teams we know we can beat,” Dailey said. “Just be aggressive. You’ve got nothing to lose by being aggressive.”

Adna will be the lone C2BL team not opening league play on Thursday, as the Pirates (7-0) are off until next Tuesday. They’ll open league play at home against Rainier in a rematch of a 2023 state quarterfinal, which Rainier won in five sets.
