Constant pressure eventually paid off for the Adna girls soccer team, which stayed perfect in the Central 2B League North with a 4-0 win at Raymond-South Bend on Wednesday.
The Pirates fired off 16 shots to their hosts’ two, but while the shot counter kept ticking up, the one number on the scoreboard that mattered stayed flat early, as the Riptide were content to soak up pressure without much threat of a counterattack.
“We came out with a lot of intensity but just couldn’t take care of the ball well enough on the turf to start,” Adna coach Patrick Richardson said. “RSB just wanted to boot the long ball to keep us out of their end. WE kept our pressure up, though, and dominated their end of the field all game.”
The press and possession finally gave way to results in the 30th minute, when Karlee VonMoos set up Destiny Roller, who scored to break the deadlock.
Coming out of halftime, Adna kept the offense going, with Roller doubling the lead five minutes into the second half. VonMoos got herself onto the scoresheet with a 35-yard free kick in the 55th minute, and to put the finishing touches on the win, Abby McAuley scored in the 78th to make it 4-0.
“They played pretty physically at times, but we didn’t allow that to get to us,” Richardson said. “We did a good job making adjustments throughout the game and we definitely got comfortable.
Adna (10-1, 6-0 league) will host Ocosta next Monday.
