Pirates sweep Ducks in first non-league leaguer

The Adna volleyball team stayed perfect on the young season Tuesday, sweeping Toutle Lake 26-24, 25-18, 25-17 in a non-league affair between two of the top teams in the Central 2B League.

“I was really impressed with the extra effort the girls were showing, digging and diving to keep the ball in play,” Adna coach Wendie Dotson said. “That extra effort inspires the team’s effort.”

The extra effort was needed in a close first set, where the Ducks got to set point before the Pirates (3-0) rallied back to first save and then take the game for themselves.

From there, things stayed close but got a bit less fraught, in a rematch of a loser-out match at last year’s 2B state tournament.

“We are moving forward, and we still have to keep working to better our skills,” Dotson said.

Karsyn Freeman led the Pirates on offense with 13 kills and seven aces, and also posted three digs. Next to her, Kendall Humphrey did a bit of everything with 11 kills, six digs, four aces and three blocks. Charissa Schierman had a similarly widespread statline, finishing with six kills, eight assists, four digs and two aces.

Danika Hallom had a team-high 11 digs to go along with five kills, Jaylee Humphrey added nine digs, and Gaby Guard dished out 23 assists.

Adna will get another non-league C2BL clash Thursday, at Rainier.
