Pirates Sweep Seagulls, Down Ducks to Take Third at Districts

The Adna volleyball team responded from a loss in the 2B District 4 semifinals to Kalama Wednesday with two resounding wins Saturday afternoon in Raymond over the host Seagulls in a sweep, and then against Toutle Lake in the third-place game in four sets.

The 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 win over Raymond ensured the Pirates would advance to the state tournament for the second consecutive season.

“Raymond is very scrappy and covered the court well,” Pirates coach Wendie Dotson said. “Our girls passed well today, but struggled a little on the service line missing four serves in the first set. We were able to settle and serve aggressively in the later sets and earn a berth to the state tournament.”

Kendall Humphrey had 17 kills to lead the Pirates to go along with eight digs, and Brooklyn Loose and Gaby Guard added 30 combined assists at the setter spots. Danika Hallom had eight kills and 17 digs, as well.

In the third-place game against Toutle Lake, a four-set, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 win, the Pirates learned from the mistakes of a previous loss against the Ducks this season to capture third in the district.

“We tightened up our defense and serving while hitting aggressively,” Dotson said. “The team did a better job digging balls up than when we previously played them, it was a nice win for the team.”

Humphrey again had 15 kills and eight digs to lead the Pirates, with Hallom adding 13 kills, nine digs, and six aces, and Loose dishing out 18 assists with two kills and four aces.

The Pirates will find out who they will play and as what seed at the state tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome on Thursday, Sunday during the WIAA selection show at 11 a.m.
