Rainier finds way to win in Morton

The Rainier volleyball team came into Tuesday well under 100% and ran into a Morton-White Pass side hopped up on senior day energy, but put things together in time to come away with a 21-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 win in Central 2B League action.

“We struggled with injuries and illnesses the past few days, so I am really proud of the way the girls kept it together and fought hard,” Rainier coach Carrie Ooms said.

Acacia Murphy and Allyson Ooms split the team lead on offense for the Mountaineers (9-3, 4-1 C2BL), while Ooms added 15 digs to her line. Brooklyn Swenson had 18 assists and for aces, and Katelyn Eckroth had 12 assists.

Olivia Earsley led the Rainier defense with 30 digs.

The first set was the first an opponent has taken from Rainier in four matches, but the Mountaineers sped up as the night went on.

“We had senior night, and that energy really pumped the girls up,” MWP coach Jaime Brazil said. “We started off strong but once we lost the momentum, we just couldn't seem to get it back. Mental toughness is something we will continue to work on.”

Rainier will take on Napavine at home in a crucial league match on Thursday. MWP (4-9, 0-6 C2BL) will face Toledo on the road.
