Rededication of Veterans Wall of Honor in Morton set for Veterans Day; Mossyrock VFW post hosting dinner

With Veterans Day next Wednesday, a rededication ceremony has been announced for the Veterans Wall of Honor in Morton, according to American Legion Post 215 Commander Ed Smith.

“We spruced it up, cleaned it up and did a bunch of work to it,” Smith told The Chronicle.

Though he didn’t know when the wall was originally constructed, Smith added he would look into it.

Wall restoration efforts began after the property owners reached out wanting to refurbish the memorial — which had been exposed to the elements in East Lewis County for years — to honor local veterans.

Smith stated the rededication ceremony for the Veterans Wall of Honor in Morton begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The wall is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and state Route 7 in Morton, and accessible from the parking lot of Chimis Family Mexican Restaurant and the Seasons Motel.

Along with the Veterans Wall of Honor, the location is also home to the Loggers Memorial Wall.

Later on Wednesday in the neighboring East Lewis County community of Mossyrock, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5439 will host a Veterans Day dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. inside the Mossyrock Community Center, located at 219 E. State St. in Mossyrock.

Washington state District 16 VFW Auxiliary President Dorren Dale will speak during the dinner, which is being cooked up by The Crowded Kitchen Catering.

The dinner menu features smoked brisket with horseradish cream and buttermilk basil chicken, along with various sides, desserts and drinks. While free for veterans (with documentation) and kids under 10 accompanied by a veteran, dinner plates are $25 a person.

Aside from these Veterans Day events in East Lewis County, others are planning to honor veterans on Wednesday in Winlock, Toledo and the Twin Cities. For more information on the times and locations of those events, read The Chronicle’s preview online at https://tinyurl.com/2s4ry3hn.
