Ignited by another stout game from tailback Nico Acosta and another shutout, the Toledo High School football team claimed their fourth straight win by cruising by Toutle Lake 56-0 at home on Friday night in a C2BL East battle.
It’s now 13 of the last 14 quarters where the Riverhawks (4-1, 1-0 C2BL East) have not allowed a point and three straight games they’ve recorded a clean sheet. Head coach Mike Christensen has seen that side of the ball, with guys playing both ways for the first time, grow in their roles.
“You make changes, you want to see them execute,” he said. “Our guys have bought into what we’re doing and the results have been good. It is those game reps; they are finally starting to get it.”
Nico Acosta recorded 139 yards on just eight carries and scored four times while Joaquin Acosta scored both his TDs in a first half which saw Toledo put up 44 points. Seniors Matthew Martin and Wyatt Barnes found the end zone in the second half.
The Riverhawks offensive line – Martin, Bode Buswell, James Viegel, Masson Ruiz, Kalvin Reed – plus TE Brady Weeks and WB Brody Lawrence have grown together ever since Week 1.
“They are really gelling,” Christensen said. “When the backfield looked sloppy, we were missing blocking assignments. We were at 80 percent successful blocking and since then, it has improved.”
Toledo will take on 1A Castle Rock next week at home in the final non-league game of the season.
