Riverhawks top Timberwolves in Portland

The Toledo and Morton-White Pass girls basketball teams got a “special opportunity” on Friday, as the two teams took the court at the Moda Center in Portland, and it was Toledo that came away with a 47-49 win.

The T-Wolves (4-4, 1-2 C2BL) came out strong, taking an early lead by converting on several Toledo mistakes. McKenzee Mays and Natalia Armstrong combined for 18 points in the first half.

The Riverhawks (6-4, 1-3 C2BL) responded nicely before the break, however, as they went on a 12-1 run that flipped a 12-point deficit into a 1-point lead heading into halftime.

As the game became more physical, the T-Wolves ran into some foul trouble, and Keira Miller ended up fouling out in the second half.

“That threw us out of rhythm a bit,” MWP coach Tim Roberts said.

Armstrong ended up with a team-high 14 points, while Mays added 12 and grabbed three steals of her own. Malia Armstrong was solid all-around, tallying four rebounds, steals and assists.

“Toledo did a good job of converting when they needed to late in the game,” Roberts said. These early tough battles will pay off in the long run for us.  We just have to trust the process and keep working hard.”

The Riverhawks are back in action on Wednesday at home against Lake Quinault, while the Timberwolves will face Hoquiam and Naselle on Dec. 28 and 29 at Raymond.
