A 22-year-old Kelso man was arrested Monday afternoon after threatening to rob a Kelso convenience store with a gun.

He also handed the clerk his gun and asked him to call the police.

No one was hurt during the attempted robbery.

Kelso police Capt. Rich Fletcher said the incident occurred just after 3 p.m., at the AMPM gas station at 1700 Allen St., near the Denny’s restaurant.

Rafael Gomez, Jr., entered the convenience store and told the clerk, Edward Kyle Sawyer, of Kelso, he was going to rob him, Fletcher said. Gomez presented a gun in his waist, and asked Sawyer to call the police.

Sawyer said the suspect slammed the gun on the counter as he saw police arrive, so Sawyer took the weapon.

When police arrived, Gomez surrendered to police without any issues, said Fletcher.

According to Sawyer, this was the first attempted robbery of the convenience store in over 20 plus years.

Gomez had his first court appearance scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, according to court records.
