Seagulls Knock Mountaineers Out of Districts

The Rainier boys basketball team took a bit too long to get its offense going and paid the price Wednesday, falling to Raymond 55-49 in a 2B District tournament loser-out matchup at Castle Rock to end its season.

“Hats off to Raymond,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We really struggled to string quality possessions together against their zone.”

Josh Meldrum scored 19 points to lead all scorers, Gavin Owen had 13, and Jake Meldrum pitched in nine. On the other side of the court, Raymond put four Seagulls in double figures, led by Morgan Anderson’s 16.

The Mountaineers are set to graduate Owen and Trevor Anderson, who was in his first year with the program. The rest of the lineup is set to come back for another round.

“We will return a core group of players next year who will look to help us take the next step,” Sheaffer said.
