Second human skull found in Gifford Pinchot National Forest in past month

Less than a month after a hiker found a human skull in Gifford Pinchot National Forest in eastern Washington, a bear hunter has discovered a second human skull in the federal preserve.

The hunter reported finding the remains last Wednesday, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Tuesday.

A sheriff’s detective recovered the skull from the national forest, and officials confirmed that it was human. The identity of the remains is currently unknown and the sheriff’s office is investigating, officials said.

There are no indications of any danger to the public, the sheriff’s office said.

The skull found in August is believed to be the remains of a 31-year-old Beaverton hiker who went missing in 2013.
