Two of the three candidates running for a spot on the Morton City Council will advance from the Aug. 1 primary election to the general election in November.

With just 191 total votes turned in for Morton City Council position No. 1 on Tuesday night, candidate Jason Sawyer was topping the results with 45.55% of turned in ballots, or 87 total votes.

The other two candidates are still too close to call with only preliminary results. In second place, Dennis Morningstar had 50 votes, or 26.18%, and Aubrey Grantham had 48, or 25.13%, as of the Lewis County Auditor’s Office’s preliminary vote tally on Tuesday night.

The seat is currently held by Councilor Kevin Dunlap, who is not seeking re-election.

In the first round of ballots counted, just 21.82% of Lewis County’s 35,140 registered voters had turned out. Over 7,600 ballots had been counted throughout the county, and the next set of results was slated to come in at 4 p.m. on Aug. 2.

The election will be certified on Aug. 15 at the Lewis County Courthouse.
