Sirens: Centralia Middle School student arrested after bringing handgun to school; Male in grim reaper mask robs store

Centralia Middle School student arrested after bringing handgun to school 

• A Centralia Middle School student was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 for unlawful possession of a firearm after bringing a handgun to school in their backpack. Other students had heard rumors the suspect had brought the weapon to school and reported it to school staff, who contacted law enforcement, according to Centralia Middle School Principal Lara Gregorich-Bennett. The weapon was not loaded and was never brandished or displayed, according to Gregorich-Bennett. “I’m just super, super proud of the kids that came forward,” she said Wednesday. 

 

Theft 

• A 25-year-old Chehalis woman was cited for shoplifting in the 300 block of Reynolds Avenue just after 10:55 a.m. on Oct. 29. 

• A bike was reported stolen from the 600 block of South Diamond Street at 4:10 p.m. on Oct. 30. The bike’s owner reported the bike was unattended for about an hour before it was stolen. 

• A blue Diamondback bicycle was reported stolen from the 600 block of North National Avenue just after 6 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

• An unidentified male suspect was reportedly caught siphoning diesel exhaust fuel from a rental truck at a car dealership in the 1000 block of South Gold Street just after 8:35 p.m. on Oct. 31. He fled the scene before officers arrived. 

 

Vehicle accidents 

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported in the 1000 block of Harrison Avenue just after 7 p.m. on Oct. 29. 

• A 30-year-old Centralia man was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries after he crashed his car into a pole at the intersection of Yew and Main streets just after 10:10 p.m. on Oct. 29. Witnesses reported the vehicle was speeding before the collision. The man was cited for driving under the influence. 

• A minor, non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported at the intersection of East Hanson Street and North Tower Avenue at 2:50 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

• A dark-colored mini van reportedly struck a teenager and fled the scene at the intersection of West Second and H streets just before 6:20 p.m. on Oct. 31. The teenager complained of elbow pain after the collision but was otherwise uninjured.

 

Criminal trespass 

• A 40-year-old homeless man from Toledo was trespassed from a property in the 200 block of Fremont Avenue just before 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 after he was involved in a dispute. 

 

Suspicious circumstances 

• A possible burglary of a business in the 400 block of South Tower Avenue was reported at approximately 6:10 a.m. on Oct. 30. Officers responded and found “evidence of an extinguished fire of someone trying to keep warm outside the business.” Officers confirmed there was no damage to the business. 

• Two suspicious male subjects were reportedly “walking in carports” in the 1000 block of South Pearl Street just after 1:50 p.m. on Oct. 31. “There was no evidence of any crimes,” according to the Centralia Police Department. 

• An unlocked door was reported at a business in the 1000 block of Marsh Avenue at 5:45 a.m. on Nov. 1. An officer checked the building and confirmed no one was inside. 

 

Burglary 

• A 22-year-old homeless man from Centralia was arrested at Borst Park at approximately 12:25 p.m. on Oct. 30 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree burglary. 

 

Assault 

• A 41-year-old Centralia man was arrested in the 500 block of Madison Street just before 4:25 a.m. on Oct. 31 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for fourth-degree assault, domestic violence. 

 

Attempt to contact 

• An unconscious male was reportedly “laying by the sidewalk” in the 200 block of East Locust Street just after 2:35 p.m. on Oct. 31. Officers contacted the male, who said “he was just resting and did not need any help.” He ultimately got up and left the area. 

 

Malicious mischief 

• Vandalism to a building was reported in the 1300 block of Rose Street just after 4:50 p.m. on Oct. 31. 

 

Recovered vehicle 

• Officers, with help from the Flock camera system, located a stolen vehicle in the 900 block of Harrison Avenue just before 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 31. The case is under investigation. 

 

CHEHALIS POLICE DEPARTMENT 

Criminal trespass 

• Two subjects were reportedly trespassing on railroad tracks behind in the 100 block of Southwest William Avenue just after 2:55 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

• A homeless man who was reportedly “bothering the tenants and smoking weed” outside an apartment complex in the 600 block of Northwest Center Street was trespassed from the property at approximately 3:05 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

• Subjects were reportedly camping in the 800 block of Northwest Maryland Avenue just before 7 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

• A case of trespassing reported in the 700 block of Northwest Liberty Place at 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 31 is under investigation. 

• A male subject was cited for trespassing in the 600 block of Northwest Center Street just before 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 31. 



• A subject was cited for trespassing in the 600 block of Northwest Center Street just after 9:20 p.m. on Oct. 31. 

 

Robbery 

• A male subject reportedly ran into a business in the 1200 block of South Market Boulevard just after 7:35 a.m. on Oct. 30, grabbed money out of the till and fled the scene on foot. Witnesses reported the suspect had a “blanket draped over his head Grim Reaper-style.” Charges have been referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office. 

 

Theft 

• Two male subjects were cited for shoplifting in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

• Just after 1:40 p.m. on Oct. 31, a caller reported someone stole tomatoes off of her porch in the 200 block of Southwest James Street. 

• A shoplift was reported in the 1500 block of North National Avenue at 5:35 p.m. on Oct. 31. 

 

Vehicle accidents 

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Oct. 30. 

• A non-injury, non-blocking, two-vehicle collision was reported at the intersection of Northwest Chehalis Avenue and West Main Street just after 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

 

Hit-and-run 

• A hit-and-run reported in the 1100 block of South Market Boulevard at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Oct. 30. 

 

Assault 

• Just after 4:55 p.m. on Oct. 30, an assault that occurred in the 10 block of Southwest Chehalis Avenue about two hours prior was reported. 

• A male subject was arrested in the 1900 block of Northeast Kresky Avenue just after 12:40 a.m. on Oct. 31 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for fourth-degree assault, domestic violence. 

 

Suspicious circumstances 

• Two male subjects wearing “black hoods” and carrying a pressure washer were reportedly at the intersection of Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Salsbury Avenue just before 2 a.m. on Oct. 31. 

• A male subject was reportedly scraping the name off of a tractor in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just before 1:20 p.m. on Oct. 31. 

• A school in the 100 block of Northeast Hampe Way called at 3:35 p.m. on Oct. 31 to report a student was not picked up after school got out at about 1 p.m. that day. A guardian was ultimately contacted. 

 

Civil assist 

• Just after 11 a.m. on Oct. 31, an 81-year-old woman called to ask for help getting her husband with dementia into a vehicle in the 1200 block of South Market Boulevard. 

 

Sexual misconduct 

• Sexual misconduct reported in the 1200 block of Bishop Road at approximately 12:55 p.m. on Oct. 31 is under investigation. 

 

Harassment 

• A homeless man was cited for trespassing in the 600 block of Northwest Center Street just after 3 p.m. on Oct. 31.

 

Juvenile problems 

• A large group of juveniles was reportedly playing basketball in the roadway in the 400 block of Southwest Washington Avenue just before 3:05 p.m. on Oct. 31 and was not allowing traffic to pass through. The reporting party stated one of the juveniles “threw the basketballs off of (the caller’s) car and started laughing.” 

• Juveniles were reportedly climbing on the tops of the picnic table covers at a park in the 200 block of Southwest 13th Street just after 9:25 p.m. on Oct. 31. 

 

Shooting complaint 

• Just before 11:05 p.m. on Oct. 31, a caller reported hearing approximately eight gunshots in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street. 

 

LEWIS COUNTY JAIL STATISTICS

As of Wednesday morning, the Lewis County Jail had a total system population of 138 inmates, including 125 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of general population inmates, 103 were reported male and 22 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.
