Sirens: Several issued warnings for camping in city; Thief attempts to flush merchandise; DUI arrest; Lewis County Jail statistics

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT 

Camping 

• A homeless man who was reportedly camping on the sidewalk in the 200 block of East Main Street was moved along just before 8:05 a.m. on Aug. 11. 

• The Centralia Police Department, in conjunction with a health official, conducted a safety check of a homeless camp in the 1600 block of West Reynolds Avenue at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Aug. 11. 

• A homeless man was reportedly camping in his vehicle on city streets in the 1000 block of Eckerson Road at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 12. The man was given a warning about camping on city streets and was advised to move per the city’s code. 

• A man was reportedly sleeping in his car on private property in the 1100 block of Scammon Creek Road just after 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 12. The man was trespassed from the property per the land management’s request. 

• A male subject was reportedly sleeping in a vehicle in the 500 block of North Pearl Street just after 1:35 p.m. on Aug. 12. Officers conducted a welfare check on the male and, during the check, officers recognized the male as a suspect in a second-degree theft case, according to the Centralia Police Department. The man, 29, of Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree theft.  An additional charge of knowingly possessing a controlled substance was referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office. 

• A man and a woman who were camping on city-owned property at the intersection of North Railroad Avenue and East Hanson Street at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 12 were given a warning for camping on city property and were provided with local resource information. 

• The occupant of an RV parked at the intersection of Borst and Belmont avenues just before 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 13 was issued a verbal warning about camping in the city. 

• A woman who was reportedly setting up a camper in a park in the 310 block of Lowe Street just after 6:40 p.m. on Aug. 13 was given a verbal warning for camping in the city. 

 

Disorderly conduct 

• A homeless man who allegedly had a gun was reportedly “patting people down” at a business in the 500 block of Harrison Avenue just after 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 11. Officers contacted the man and discovered he did not have a firearm. The male was trespassed from the business at the management’s request. 

• A man was reportedly “screaming and acting disorderly” in a park in the 2000 block of Borst Avenue just after 6:45 a.m. on Aug. 12. The man was given a warning for disorderly conduct. 

• A disorderly woman from Chehalis was reportedly screaming and throwing items in the 100 block of West Magnolia Street at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Aug. 13. Officers contacted the woman, conducted a welfare check, offered her local resources and issued a warning for disorderly conduct. 

• A disorderly female reportedly refused to leave a shelter in the 100 block of North Gold Street at 9:25 p.m. on Aug. 13. The female left before officers arrived. 

 

Vehicle accidents 

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported at the intersection of East Summa and South Gold streets at 10:50 a.m. on Aug. 11. 

• A vehicle reportedly collided with a building in the 1700 block of Industrial Drive just after 1:40 a.m. on Aug. 12. No injuries were reported. 

 

Hit-and-run 

• A hit-and-run reported in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue just after 2 p.m. on Aug. 11 is under investigation. 

 

Suspicious circumstances 

• Just after 1:55 p.m. on Aug. 11, officers responded to a report of a homeless woman sitting in front of a store in the 1000 block of Belmont Avenue drinking a beer. When the management asked the woman to leave, the woman “told the employee that she owned the place then she left shortly after,” according to the Centralia Police Department. Officers checked the area and were not able to locate the woman.

• Just before 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 13, an officer reportedly saw a driver throw an item out of their vehicle at the intersection of Prospect Avenue and Kearney Street and sped away. The item was later found to be a BB gun made to resemble a real pistol. The case is under investigation. 

 

Disputes 

• Two teens were reportedly fighting in a parking lot in the 1800 block of Cooks Hill Road just after 3:35 p.m. on Aug. 11. The teens left the area before officers arrived. 

• A dispute and a noise complaint were reported in the 300 block of Hemlock Street at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Aug. 11. Officers gave the individuals a warning about the noise. 



• A dispute between several people was reported in the 1400 block of Lewis Street just before 3:40 p.m. on Aug. 13. All involved parties dispersed before officers arrived. 

• A physical dispute was reported in the 110 block of South Silver Street just after 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 13. 

 

Assault 

• Officers responded to a reported dispute in the 600 block of West Roanoke Street just after 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 12. A 20-year-old Centralia resident was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for fourth-degree assault, domestic violence. 

• A case of fourth-degree assault reported in the 500 block of Warren Street just after 11:55 p.m. on Aug. 12 is under investigation. 

• Officers responded to a case of disorderly conduct in the 115 block of South Pearl Street before 8:55 p.m. on Aug. 13. A woman who was standing in the middle of the street was “taken into protective custody for being a danger to herself,” according to the Centralia Police Department. The woman allegedly assaulted two officers while they were taking her to the hospital. 

 

Burglary 

• A burglary to a storage container in the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue that was reported just after 5:10 p.m. on Aug. 11 is under investigation. 

• A dirt bike was reported stolen out of an enclosed backyard in the 200 block of West Hanson Street at 6:05 p.m. on Aug. 12. The case is under investigation. 

 

Criminal trespass 

• A male was reportedly “dancing near a business (and) making customers uncomfortable” in the 700 block of Harrison Avenue just after 6:55 a.m. on Aug. 12. Officers responded and the male left the area. 

• At approximately 7:20 a.m. on Aug. 12, officers contacted a homeless man from Elma who was near the front door of a business in the 100 block of South Pearl Street “with his belongings strewn about.” The man was trespassed from the property per the owner’s request. 

• A disorderly female was trespassed from a business in the 600 block of South Tower Avenue at 11:15 p.m. on Aug. 13 at the staff’s request. 

 

Theft 

• A theft was reported at a retail store in the 100 block of West High Street at 5:20 p.m. on Aug. 12. Officers found the suspect at a nearby store “attempting to flush the stolen property down the toilet,” according to the Centralia Police Department. The man, 40, of Olympia, was cited for third-degree theft. 

• A female suspect reportedly stole items from a market in the 600 block of North Tower Avenue just before 8:50 p.m. on Aug. 12. The case is under investigation. 

• Two subjects were reportedly in possession of stolen merchandise in the 2020 block of Borst Avenue just before 3:35 p.m. on Aug. 13. Officers contacted the subjects, a man and a woman, and retrieved the stolen property. The male, 36, of Rochester, fled on foot and was eventually caught, according to the Centralia Police Department. He was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. 

• Two cellphones were reported stolen from the 900 block of Harrison Avenue at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 14. The case is under investigation. 

 

DUI 

• Jesus A. Gomez, 25 of Centralia, was arrested in the 1100 block of North Tower Avenue just after 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 13 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for allegedly driving under the influence, third-degree driving with a suspended license and reckless driving. 

 

LEWIS COUNTY JAIL STATISTICS

As of Friday morning, the Lewis County Jail had a total system population of 153 inmates, including 140 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of general population inmates, 109 were reported male and 31 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.
