Skiers, snowboarders compete in White Pass Ski Area’s 2025 Castle Jam trick competition

Though spring is officially set to begin on Thursday, March 20, another late-winter storm hit East Lewis County last weekend, putting fresh powder down for skiers and snowboarders competing in White Pass Ski Area’s 2025 Castle Jam trick competition.

Over 80 competitors ranging in skill classes including junior, intermediate and open took to the slopes to throw down their best tricks in the timed jam-style competition, with prizes including new skis, snowboards and other winter gear up for grabs.

The Castle Jam utilizes the remnants of the White Pass Ski Area Winter Carnival’s snow castle, repurposed and reshaped with features to allow for tricks.

While the ski season may be coming to a close here within the next month with spring’s arrival, the White Pass Ski Area still has several events coming up for winter sports enthusiasts including:

• The 40 Years of Snowboarding at White Pass celebration, marking the 40th anniversary of when snowboarders were first allowed on the ski lifts there in 1985, with events including a timed snowboard-rhythm course, snowboarding team races, an old school trick jam session, a vintage snowboard display and snowboard demos on Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, March 23. Check the White Pass Ski Area’s website for specific event times.

• High Class at White Pass, a wine tasting and silent auction fundraising event for the White Pass Ski Patrol, scheduled for Saturday, April 5, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. More details will be released on White Pass’ website when available.

• End of Season Pond Skim, where brave skiers and snowboarders are invited to test their luck on a wild ride gliding across the “picturesque WP pond” behind the Day Lodge from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.

And while the date has yet to be finalized, Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27, are the tentative dates for the Yeti Hunt Weekend, according to the resort’s website.

During this event, 10 yeti signs are placed along ski runs at the resort and those who photograph themselves with seven out of the 10 yetis can claim a prize in the White Pass Ski Area retail shop. On Saturday, multiple prizes are available, but on Sunday, only one prize is available — a season pass lift ticket for next year.
