Ryan Martin, 47, of southwest Washington was the man killed Wednesday in downtown Portland in what authorities allege was a road rage confrontation that escalated into a shooting at rush hour.

Portland police said in a statement Friday that the medical examiner determined Martin died of a gunshot but released no other information.

Geoffrey Edward Hammond, 46, a Portland financier, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court to second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon in Martin’s death and the wounding of another man at the scene.

Police and prosecutors said Hammond and Martin flipped each other off as Martin drove his truck around Hammond’s Mercedes at Southwest 10th Avenue and Alder Street about 4:30 p.m. Hammond shot Martin in the chest after Martin parked his truck, walked over to Hammond’s car and tapped on the window, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Hammond shot at a second man who held up his cellphone to record the scene and wounded him in the legs, the affidavit said.

Police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to reference case No. 23-267039 and contact Detective Ryan Foote at ryan.foote@police.portlandoregon.gov or (503) 823-0781, or Detective Travis Law at travis.law@police.portlandoregon.gov or (503) 823-0395.
