State Agencies Have Lots of Wildlife Conservation Job Openings

Washington state departments like the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Department of Natural Resources (DNR)and Department of Ecology all play a part in protecting wildlife and conserving natural habitats. If you're passionate about protecting the environment and Washington's rich animal and plant population, there may be a job opening that's the right fit for you.

  • Fish Hatchery Specialist — Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

Job type: Full time

Salary: $2,957 — $3,915 per month (Specialist level 1), $3,246 — $4,324 (Specialist level 2)

Location: Ravensdale

Job description: Cedar River Hatchery, operated by WDFW, is looking for a Fish Hatchery Specialist to support salmon conservation and provide fish and wildlife recreational opportunities for the state. The department is looking for a level 2 hatchery specialist, but will hire someone at level 1 and train them up to level 2. The candidate will be carrying out scientific, maintenance and technical duties at the hatchery, such as monitoring fish behavior, performing fish inventories and cleaning ponds and incubator systems to maintain fish health.

Requirements: If you have worked in a fish hatchery performing various duties or have completed education related to fisheries technology or biology, you likely meet several of the job's qualifications.   • Natural Resource Specialist — Washington State Department of Natural Resources

Location: Enumclaw

Job description: WDNR is seeking a silviculture forester to fill its Natural Resource Specialist position. The candidate is primarily responsible for executing the department's reforestation and young stand management activities on state land trusts. The right candidate may join on as a specialist level 1 and eventually be trained to a level 2 after a 24-month training plan.

Requirements: The qualifications vary depending on if the candidate qualifies as a level 1 or 2 specialist. Some qualifications shared between both titles include an associate's or bachelor's degree in forest management or applicable field and knowledge or experience in basic menstruation, forest biology and silviculture.   • Wildfire Program Manager — Pierce Conservation District

Job type: Full time

Salary: $52,093 — $56,343

Location: Puyallup

Job description: The Wildlife Program Manager is responsible for evaluating wildfire risks conditions and evaluating health impacts of wildfire smoke to vulnerable communities. Some responsibilities include providing technical assistance and support to communities and coordinating with Pierce County agencies on wildfire reduction and preparedness work and smoke impacts.

Requirements: The district is seeking a motivated, community-oriented candidate that has strong technical and management skills. A candidate should also have a bachelor's in natural resources or environmental science or another related field. Candidates with an associate's degree and two years of experience in natural resource management are also encouraged to apply.

  • Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Member — Washington State Department of Ecology

Job type: Seasonal; 3-month, June to September, 40 hours per week

Salary: $2,506 per month, pre-tax

Location: Statewide, including Pierce County

Job description: Conservation Corps AmeriCorps members with The Department of Ecology's will be working with the state's Shoreland and Environmental Assistance program, which provides federal and state grants to improve and protect Washington's environment. The SEA program provides guidance and assistance for managing and regulating land along the state shorelines. Members will develop hands-on environmental skills and experience in the natural resource field and work on projects related to habitat or recreational enhancement. Typical duties include operating tools, serving on steep inclines and walking miles on rough terrain and through wilderness areas per day.

Requirements: Required qualifications include being 18 to 25 years of age, except those with military service or mental or sensory disabilities, and AmeriCorps eligibility, which can be found on the department's website. Priority is given to Washington residents.
