A 38-year-old man was arrested late last month on suspicion of smashing a vehicle with an ax at the Olympia Auto Mall, according to police.

About 5:45 p.m. March 28, police were dispatched to the 2100 block of Carriage Drive Southwest on the city's west side after a report that a man had damaged a Jeep Wrangler in the area, Lt. Paul Lower said.

The suspect was found at a nearby gas station and taken into custody without incident, according to police.

In addition to the ax, the suspect had what police described as "two large fixed-blade knives, a saw blade, a metal claw and two hunting knives."

The ax was used to break a driver-side window, a side view mirror and the steering column, totaling about $6,000 in damage, Lower said.

The man was booked on suspicion of first-degree malicious mischief, according to police.
