Tenino battles, earns draw against Eatonville

The Tenino girls soccer team bounced back from a tough loss nicely on Wednesday, as the Beavers earned a 1-1 draw against Eatonville.

“It was a super entertaining game,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “We’re really happy with how the team performed.”

After a scoreless first half, the Beavers (1-1-1) started to create more chances in the second half, and it paid off when Callie Mickelson connected after a Chloe Grayless pass to give Tenino a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.

“We’re starting to be a lot more dangerous with the ball,” Montgomery said. “For most of the second half, we were the more dangerous team and had some fun out there.”

Eatonville didn’t trail for long, as Linnea Lofgren tied the game in the 72nd minute.

“A bummer to give up a goal in the final 10 minutes,” Montgomery said. “But, that’s soccer.”

Montgomery was very proud of the entire team after the game, including eighth-graders Georgia Core and Charley Jones, who played 80 and 60 minutes, respectively, in their varsity debuts.

“That was pretty cool to see their contributions and their poise for such young players,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery also gave a shout out to AJ Kalkus, who had six saves in net, and assistant coach Trevor Fetbrandt, who he credited with coming up with a “pretty unique gameplan.”

“We really frustrated Eatonville in the first half,” Montgomery said. “It took them a while to make any adjustments … I’m gonna hold onto it moving ahead.”

The Beavers are on the road again on Saturday, when they’ll head to Aberdeen to take on the Bobcats.
