The Tenino girls soccer team started the second half of league play on the wrong foot, as the Beavers fell to Montesano 4-1.
Jaelyn Butterfield scored three goals in the first half to put Montesano up 3-0, and Hazel Jones added the fourth in the 68th minute.
“There still was some improvement,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “But there’s some issues we have to take care of on the back line … Just little bits of execution that we didn’t quite pull off. Nothing that can’t be fixed by having a couple of good practices.
Tenino got on the board in the final minutes, as some late offensive pressure in the box forced a Montesano own goal.
Though they were outshot 27-9, the Beavers still had some chances throughout the game.
“We had our moments,” Montgomery said. “We just weren’t able to capitalize on anything.”
Gracie Sweet had 11 saves in net for Tenino, while Montesano keeper Izzie Taylor saved six shots.
Another tough league opponent awaits the Beavers, as they’ll return home to host Elma on Thursday.
“It’s not impossible to get a result from either of these games,” Montgomery said. “We just have to play to our fullest potential and not be scared of these two teams that have been at the top of our league the last three years.”
