Interested singers should contact Director Margaret Eby at 360-791-5493 to schedule a time to try out. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings, 6:30-9:30 p.m., at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1515 Harrison Ave., Olympia.

“The chorus is all about supporting each singer to do their best,” Ebay stated in a news release.

The group sings barbershop-style harmony, memorizing their music so performances can be dynamic and exciting, according to the news release. Emphasis is on learning, with each member always aiming to improve.

“Even women who’ve been singing for decades take lessons!” noted Jan Smallwood, team leader for the chorus.

The Olympia Chorus is a part of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), a worldwide, nonprofit organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, performance and competition. All choruses in SAI are organized by region. Olympia Chorus is part of North by Northwest Region 13 along with over 20 others from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

“Normally, we’d be preparing for the annual Sweet Adelines convention in May,” said Julia Pinnix, events coordinator. “But this year is our 60th anniversary. So we’re celebrating with our community instead.”
