New South Thurston County location joins others in Centralia, Chehalis and South Bend

On Monday, June 17, Thorbeckes held the grand opening of the gym’s newest location in Grand Mound.

Officially called Grand Mound Thorbeckes on the gym’s website, the new gym is located just off Interstate 5 at 19548 Vision Dr. SW in Grand Mound. It is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

For those 18 and older, 24-hour access to the new gym is available through regular Thorbeckes memberships. Those interested in gaining 24-hour access must simply fill out the proper form with the gym’s receptionist to gain an after-hours entry card.

Thorbeckes owner Matt Noren told The Chronicle during a December 2023 interview the gym is fully equipped with a variety of different workout equipment from cardio machines to free weights and strength training.

“It’s pretty much going to have everything that we have in the big gyms, just on a smaller basis,” Noren said.

Treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers, rowers, bikes, free weights, strength machines and a core stretching area are all spread out over the Grand Mound Thorbeckes’ approximately 3,000 square feet of space.

Already running locations in Centralia, Chehalis and South Bend, Noren said the company had been eyeing a return to South Thurston County following the closure of its Rochester location.

While there is no pool, those in Grand Mound are only 6 miles away from the aquatic center in the Centralia location.

Physical therapy services will also be available in Grand Mound as Thorbeckes has partnered with Chehalis and Centralia Physical Therapy, from whom they are leasing the building and will carry out therapy sessions inside a facility on-site.

“The two businesses really go well together,” Noren added.

As for what’s next, the possibility of another new Thorbeckes is being considered.

“I’ve said it for a couple of years we’d love to get to East Lewis County. I’d love to be out there,” he said last year. “It’s just very difficult to find the right spot.”

Originally founded in 1982 by Dale Pullin, Noren and his wife Andrea Noren purchased Thorbeckes from Pullin in 2017 after the Norens opened up the Pacific Sports Spa inside the Chehalis Thorbeckes FitLife Center. Noren only intended to expand Pacific Sports Spa next to Thorbeckes in Chehalis, but as Pullin and Noren got to know each other, Pullin decided to sell him Thorbeckes as he planned to retire over health concerns and spend time with his family.

Monthly memberships at Thorbeckes cost $45.95 per person, or $45.95 per month plus $22 per additional family member per month. Discounts are available for military members, seniors and students, and Thorbeckes also offers day use guest passes.
