Three people were hurt after a 16-year-old driver triggered a collision near Roy in south Pierce County Saturday afternoon, according to the Washington State Patrol.

About 3 p.m., the 16-year-old Roy boy was headed west on state Route 702, approaching Eighth Avenue. Troopers say he turned left in the area, but failed to yield to oncoming traffic and crashed into a Roy couple driving east on the same highway.

The man and woman in the eastbound vehicle, both in their 60s, were injured and taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, according to State Patrol.

The Roy boy was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. He faces a second-degree negligent driving charge, troopers say.

Following the crash, the road was blocked for about 50 minutes, according to State Patrol.
