Thurston County approves contract for affordable housing units in Tumwater

The Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved a contract with South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity (SPSHFH) for the construction of 14 units to be sold for affordable homeownership in Tumwater.

The contract is for a total amount of $560,000. The funding to support the project will come from the Local Home Fund, a sales and use tax of one-tenth of 1% that applies throughout all of Thurston County, except the cities Olympia and Tenino, which have passed their own home fund sales tax legislation.

SPSHFH applied after Thurston County’s Office of Housing and Homeless Prevention’s request for proposals for affordable housing capital projects in April 2024. The application included a proposal to develop seven duplex townhomes, resulting in 14 units for affordable homeownership on Halvorsen Lane Southeast in Tumwater.

When all phases of the project are complete, the Talicn Townhomes development will offer 14 duplex townhomes, a total of 28 units, for affordable housing that will be sold to low-income, first-time homebuyers.

SPSHFH began construction on the first phase of the Talicn Townhomes in late 2024 and is nearing the completion and sale of the first four units. The funds being contracted with this award will be applied toward the development cost of the remaining units in the phase.

The Thurston Affordable Housing Advisory Board recommended this funding award to the Thurston Regional Housing Council during its May 8, 2024, meeting, which received unanimous approval. The BOCC approved the preliminary funding award for the project at its June 18, 2024, meeting.
