Thurston County deputies arrested a driver involved in a Monday crash on Meridian Road Southeast on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

The driver, a 21-year-old Olympia man, was arrested and booked into the Thurston County jail early Thursday morning after being released from a local hospital, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

A passenger in the vehicle, an Olympia man in his early 20s, reportedly died in the crash. The Olympian has asked the Thurston County Coroner's Office to confirm his identity and cause of death.

The jail roster shows the driver also is accused of reckless driving, second-degree malicious mischief and failure to transfer a motor vehicle title within 45 days.

The driver crashed into a fence and green utility box at about 10 p.m. as the two were headed south on the 6200 block of Meridian Road Southeast, Lt. Mike Brooks told The Olympian Tuesday.

The sheriff's office also released dash camera footage Thursday. The video shows a deputy finding the crashed vehicle in the middle of the roadway and speaking with the driver. The vehicle appears heavily damaged and the passenger is unresponsive.

The new release reveals more details about the incident from the perspective of law enforcement.

Deputies responded to an unknown injury, blocking collision on Rainier Road about 10 p.m. Monday. One of the responding deputies reportedly approached from the Nisqually Valley area with their lights and sirens on.

This deputy observed a vehicle doing "doughnuts" at the intersection of Meridian Road and Mullen Road, according to the release. The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled southbound on Meridian Road as the deputy approached.

The sheriff office alleges the driver sped away at speeds over 90 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone. The deputy reportedly sped up to try and identify the car but did not pursue.

The release says the deputy found the vehicle crashed in the middle of the road after rounding a corner near 62nd Avenue Southeast.

The deputy contacted the driver, who was belted in the car, and spoke with him before he was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to  the release.
