A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of boating hit-and-run with injury, following an incident that happened earlier this month, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office announced on social media.
The man was taken into custody Friday, according to Thurston County jail information.
On the afternoon of Aug. 3, deputies were dispatched to Carlyon Beach, which is near Steamboat Island.
“A power boat had collided with a kayak, leaving its two occupants floating in the water. The operator of the power boat, who was alone, continued on without stopping to assist,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a previous social media post. “Thanks to a detailed description of the boat, our boating deputies were able to track it down. The boat was owned by the operator’s employer, who cooperated fully with the investigation. The suspect has been located and is now facing criminal charges.”
A father and son from Woodinville were in the kayak, Kiro 7 TV reported.
Phillip and Anthony Hill say they were in the water for ten minutes when they spotted a boat coming at them full speed, according to the report.
“We waved our paddles, we were screaming profanities and trying to get his attention. We just had to bail out and we went out the front, I went over the side under the kayak and the boat went right over the top of the kayak,” Phillip Hill told Kiro 7 TV.
The driver sped off, after shredding the kayak, according to the report.
Jet skiers took the two back to shore, where medics treated them for cuts and bruises, according to the report.
