There were 39 combined walks, eight total hit by pitches and four wild pitches. Just 23 hits were had between Morton-White Pass and Wahkiakum on Thursday night at White Pass.
Yet all that mattered to Timberwolves head coach Derek Bowen was getting a win.
Ignited by three extra base hits from eighth grader Karlee Coleman and an 11-run second inning, M-WP triumphed over the Mules 25-24 for its first victory of the season.
“They were ecstatic and we’ll take those anyway we can get them,” Bowen said. “I would consider us a fairly younger team, so there were some things we can build off of.”
The Timberwolves led 6-4 after the opening inning, then blew the doors open with the double digit run frame in the second. Wahkiakum made it interesting with seven runs in the third to trim the margin to five.
M-WP responded with three runs in the bottom half and both sides scored five in the fourth. The Mules plated seven more in the top of the fifth, but that was all and due to darkness, the game was over after five innings.
Coleman yanked her first career home run for the Timberwolves and roped two doubles. She, alongside Ruby Barnett, paced the team with four RBIs each. Alyssa Kampa drew five walks and didn’t register an at-bat.
“That was something we communicated with them to be smart at the plate,” Bowen said of the patience shown to draw 20 walks. “The pitches that were coming in, I thought we did a good job capitalizing.”
