Toledo hands Ocosta first loss in league opener

Toledo came away with an impressive win on the pitch on Wednesday night, as the Riverhawks downed previously unbeaten Ocosta 2-1 to open C2BL play with a victory.

“We played them well at home,” Toledo coach Horst Malunat said. “I told the girls, we need to win our home games, and we did that tonight.”

Toledo outplayed Ocosta for most of the match, outshooting them 13-3 and limiting the Wildcats’ chances offensively.

The Riverhawks scored the first two goals of the game, as Peyton Holter scored in the 11th minute and Xtyn Norberg also found the back of the net in the 35th. Ryah Stanley got the assist on both goals.

Ocosta’s lone goal came on the final play of the first half, when Kylee Denny connected on a free kick.

“It’s just one rung on the ladder,” Malunat said. “We climbed the first rung, and now we have to climb the second, and so on.”

Coming up next for the Riverhawks (4-4, 1-0 C2BL) is a familiar foe, as they’ll take on Adna at home on Monday. Malunat led Adna to the state title game in 2021, which the Pirates lost in penalty kicks to Kalama.

After heading to Winlock next Wednesday, Oct. 9, Malunat will get another chance to top former Kalama coach John Bates, who is now at Napavine, at home on Monday, Oct. 14.
