A man facing domestic violence assault charges for allegedly striking and strangling a woman in Toledo on Monday was released from the Lewis County Jail on Tuesday after posting $100,000 bail.
The defendant, Rodney L. Holt-Cherrington, 50, of Toledo, is accused of knocking a woman’s plate of food out of her hands, pushing her backwards in a camping chair, using his forearm against her neck to push her against the wall, striking her in the head, grabbing and throwing her out of a sliding glass door, kicking her and threatening to kill her during an argument at a Toledo property on Jan. 2.
After Holt-Cherrington allegedly threw her outside, the victim reportedly hid behind a tree on a neighbor’s property and called a friend to pick her up, according to documents filed in Lewis County Superior Court.
She contacted law enforcement and met deputies with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office at a nearby truck stop.
When contacted by three deputies at the Toledo residence where the assault and argument allegedly occurred, Holt-Cherrington reportedly said “he and his roommate were having a ‘discussion’ and nothing physical happened,” according to court documents.
Upon arrest, Holt-Cherrington reportedly “explained that police had all the information that was needed and he had nothing to add.”
Law enforcement reportedly seized several firearms in the house “for safekeeping.”
Holt-Cherrington was booked into the Lewis County Jail on Monday and was formally charged with one count each of second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and felony harassment, all with domestic violence enhancements, on Tuesday.
“I know that (Holt-Cherrington) was quite shocked at the charging,” said defense attorney Rachael Tiller during Holt-Cherrington’s preliminary hearing in Lewis County Superior Court on Tuesday.
While Holt-Cherrington had no criminal history prior to Tuesday’s charging, Judge James Lawler granted Deputy Prosecutor Karin Phomma’s request to set Holt-Cherrington’s bail at $100,000 given the domestic violence nature of the allegations.
“I’m concerned about public safety on this one,” Lawler said in explanation of his decision to set a significant bail amount on Tuesday.
Holt-Cherrington posted that bail amount shortly after his 4 p.m. hearing on Tuesday, as jail records indicate he was released just after 7:25 p.m. that same day.
He is scheduled to return to court for his arraignment hearing on Thursday, Jan. 5.
