Toledo School Board Considers Director District Boundary Changes

The Toledo School District will host a presentation and public hearing Jan. 19 on a proposal to shift the board of director districts.

The presentation and public hearing will take place during the district’s regular board meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Toledo Elementary School cafeteria. A Zoom link is available on the district’s website at www.toledoschools.us/toledo-school-board.html.

The Toledo School District is divided into five geographic regions, or districts, one for each board seat. Candidates for school board must run for the seat of the director district they live in, according to a news release from the Toledo School District.

“By creating five equal director districts, geographic diversity is ensured on the school board,” stated the district in the news release.

Each position is elected by all district voters, so each of the five directors represents the entire district in their board actions.

Every 10 years, after each U.S. Census is completed, school districts must review the boundaries of their board of director districts to ensure equitable geographic representation.

In October 2022, the district contracted with Sammamish Data Systems to develop a proposal for new director district boundaries based on the latest census data.

“Since the last realignment of director districts in 2010, there has been a substantial shift in population growth,” said the district in the news release, “Currently, our director districts vary in population from a low of 882 in District 1 to a high of 930 in District 4.”

The proposed new director district boundaries would balance these populations so that all five districts would have approximately 983 residents, according to the news release.

Current and proposed maps are available on the district website, toledoschools.us. The first reading of the proposal is scheduled for the Feb. 16 board meeting. The second reading of the proposal and potential adoption of the proposal is scheduled for the March 16 board meeting.
