Pe Ell went scoreless for an 11-minute stretch between the third and fourth quarters and Willapa Valley ran away with a 56-37 rivalry win against the Trojans in Pe Ell on Wednesday.

“We handled the pressure early on and were getting great looks,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “But Valley is a solid team and they’re balanced offensively.”

The Trojans led 13-12 after one quarter, but the Vikings went on an 18-7 run in the second quarter to pull away for good. Then the scoring drought hit the Trojans and they were outscored 12-3 in the third quarter. They rebounded with a 14-point fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to catch up.

The Trojans were plagued by 24 turnovers, the majority coming during the tail-end of the second quarter and into the beginning of the third.

“We got in a hurry” Phelps said. “But I’m extremely happy with the way we played, and we never gave up. As coaches, we’re not disappointed and there’s a lot of room for improvement.”

Wyatt Marrs led the Trojans offensively with 12 points, while Blake Howard added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Kaidan Perkins finished with seven points and was praised by Phelps for his performance.

Pe Ell shot 13 of 38 (34%) from the field, while the Vikings were 20 of 49 (41%). Willapa Valley was led by Tyler Adkins’ game-high 16 points.

Pe Ell (3-4, 0-2 CVL) heads to Three Rivers Christian for a league matchup on Dec. 30.
