United Way of Lewis County and the Sheriff’s Office Partner for Annual ‘Shop With A Cop’ Event

United Way of Lewis County is partnering with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office to coordinate the annual “Shop With a Cop” program.

For 21 consecutive years, United Way and the sheriff’s office have worked together to give children from disadvantaged circumstances the opportunity to go Christmas shopping for their families.

Over 30 children were paired with deputies last year and went shopping with money raised by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Association and a grant from Walmart.

Selected children will meet the officer they are paired with on Dec. 14 at Walmart. Children come with a list of family members and their ages so appropriate items can be selected. After shopping, the children ride to the Lewis County Law and Justice Center in sheriff’s office vehicles. The children will then wrap gifts with the help of staff and volunteers, play games and enjoy pizza for dinner.

“The atmosphere is kept festive and it is a fun-filled evening for all involved,” an announcement from the United Way states. “Shop with a Cop allows the officers to interact with children in an uplifting atmosphere and create a sense of comfort.”
