U.S. 12 Shut Down, WSDOT Warns of "Extended Closure"

A 45 mile stretch of U.S. 12 is shut down because of several mud and rock slides, and the state Department of Transportation is warning people to expect an "extended closure."

WSDOT ordered the closure from milepost 183, which is near Naches and just a few miles from the SR 410 intersection, to milepost 138, which is near the SR 123 intersection in Lewis County.

At least two major incidents have forced the closure.  In Lewis County, heavy rains caused part of the road to wash away in the mountains west of the White Pass summit.  In Yakima County a rock slide near Rimrock lake has left the highway covered in boulders.

The same section of U.S. 12 was shut down for most of Tuesday because of a rockslide.
