U.S. Highway 12 Viewpoint at Riffe Lake Named ‘Gary Stamper Memorial Overlook’

The Washington State Transportation Commission has honored former Lewis County Commissioner Gary Stamper by placing his name on a highway viewpoint overlooking Riffe Lake.

Stamper, a longtime fixture in East Lewis County, died due to COVID-19 in September 2021.

The “Gary Stamper Memorial Overlook,” on U.S. Highway 12, east of Mossyrock, provides a panoramic view of Riffe Lake, timbered hills and the cascade mountain range.

The state transportation commission unanimously directed the Washington state Department of Transportation to begin the process of placing new signage along the highway, directing travelers to the viewpoint.

Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock, former Lewis County manager Erik Martin and Stamper’s widow, Bobbi Barnes, appeared before the state transportation board on Wednesday, July 19, in Olympia.
