An inmate at Washington State Penitentiary died a week after being assaulted by another inmate, Department of Corrections officials announced in a March 23 news release.
The victim was identified as 29-year-old Sayadeth Phouthavongxay. The suspect, whom officials did not identify in the news release, was taken into custody and placed into a "restrictive housing unit" within the prison.
According to the news release, the alleged assault occurred March 16 in the prison's West Complex Yard.
DOC officials are assisting the criminal investigation into the inmate's death, which is being conducted by the Walla Walla Police Department.
